Botany is a self-contained, village-style working-class suburb on the northern shore of Botany Bay, where industry and homes have always sat side by side. That history is written into the pipework.

Federation-era terraces and fibro beach-shack cottages sit beside post-war brick homes and newer mid-rise apartments. Four building waves, four sets of pipes, and guessing wrong on which one wastes your night.

The ground underneath adds its own problem. Shallow groundwater and storm runoff can surcharge the sewer in low-lying parts of the suburb, which is a very different failure from a simple blockage.

• Terrace and cottage pipework near Anniversary Street. The old heritage core carries the earliest drainage in the suburb, and earthenware that age cracks at the joints.
• Sewer surcharge on the flat. Groundwater already high, a storm on top of it, and the line has nowhere to push. That reads as a gurgling floor waste, not a slow sink.
• Apartment stacks off Botany Road. A shared stack turns one blockage into several households' problem, and access has to be arranged before anyone can clear it.
• Sand in the lines. Ground this porous feeds fine sand into drainage never sealed for it, silting up low sections quietly.

The reclaimed foreshore at Sir Joseph Banks Park shows what sits under this suburb: sand, water table and made ground. Pipes laid in that don't behave like pipes laid in clay.
